Tyre safety
Keeping your tyres maintained is as important as having regular servicing and MOT checks. Tyres should be kept well-inflated and above the legal tread depth limit of 1.6mm.
At Phoenix Mitsubishi, we recommend that you change your tyres when they reach a tread depth of 3mm (78% wear), as below this, the overall braking and cornering performance of your vehicle is affected. The risk of aquaplaning is also increased at depths of below 3mm.
Ideally, you should check your tyres every two weeks and before you make long journeys to ensure they are legal.
What to check – Pressure, Depth and Damage
Tyre pressures
Tyre pressure should be checked three times a month, but at the least twice a month or before setting off on a long journey. Incorrect If your tyre pressure can cause irregular wear patterns - heavy wear in the centre if overinflated or worn shoulders if underinflated.
You can find information on the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle, including which tyre pressure is best for different loads, in the driver’s manual. It’s important to remember that you must check the tyre pressures at ambient temperature (before being driven).
Tyre damage
Your tyres ought to be checked regularly for any damage, unusual wear, any foreign bodies and that the tread depth is above 3mm.
Check the sidewalls for any bulges or cuts; this could be the result of kerb or pothole damage. Any cracks that are appearing are a sign of ageing.
