Green light for Silverstone improvements
11/02/2008
The green light has been given for a 10-year redevelopment plan for
Silverstone circuit,
home of the British GP. Over the past few years there has been some doubt
over whether
the Formula One championship would continue to visit the Northamptonshire
circuit due to poor facilities, mainly the pit and paddock area, as well as
problems coping with traffic to and from the event.
The redevelopment plan has finally been put into action by the BRDC
(British Racing Drivers Club), who own Silverstone Circuits Ltd. Richard
Philips, managing director of Silverstone circuit, stated "the development
of Silverstone is now being considered with an holistic approach in order
to protect and secure Silverstone's status as a global leader and the home
of motor racing."
It would appear this 'holistic approach' includes the aim to make
Silverstone more sustainable, and beneficial to the community all year
round. Consequently, the circuit
itself is only one area of development. The new program involves a six
million sq ft
redevelopment of the entire complex, including the new pit and paddock
area, two hotels and a manufacturer test facility. An 'extreme sport and
leisure facility' is also in the works, plus a business park and university
campus.
Thankfully, the famous Silverstone track will remain untouched.
